Common Pipe Failures

Below are the most common causes for PEX pipe failures. PEX failures are not limited to these particular problems.

IMPROPER INSTALLATION

PEX piping has a maximum bend radius, which can lead to stress on the pipe caused by improper installation.

DEFECTIVE Manufacturing

Some PEX pipe manufacturers use processes which lead to pipes that are not uniform in composition and are defective.

PEX PIPING IS NOT Leak Resistant

PEX is becoming more and more popular for pipe installations.  It's lack of required fittings and flexible nature allow for quicker installs than traditional rigid pipe systems.

This seemingly quick and flexible installation does have its downfalls. There is a minimum allowable bend radius for PEX pipe and occasionally an installer will exceed the allowed bend radius and sometimes may even kink the pipe.

Extreme bends and kinks place a very high local stress on the wall of the pipe making the pipe susceptible oxidative degradation. This is especially true in southern climates where the chlorine levels run high.

This PEX pipe was bent beyond its limit and developed a leak at the stress point.

Manufacturers Cut costs and pass the problems along to you

Some PEX pipe manufacturers use processes which lead to pipe that are not uniform in composition and are defective. Defective PEX pipes will not last 50+ years as advertised and quickly degrade and become brittle when exposed to hot chlorinated water.

We are experts in PEX analysis and will determine if the pipe failed due to defective installation or because of a manufacturing defect. We also offer remediation consulting to help determine the most cost effective way to restore the piping system to a reliable condition.
